POETIC JUSTICE
BERMUDA ATLAS AND GAZETTEER

Paradise lost, paradise found,
In pages that are bound.
A timeless treasure of pictures and words,
If you've never seen, nor heard
The Siren's song like those who've been.
You'll want to return again and again.

-----------------------------------------------------

1962

Thoughts of the past come back
To a place called "Cotton Patch",
It's not here in Tennessee,
But somewhere far across the sea.
A pale green house high on a hill,
I wonder if it sits there still,
Surrounded by banana trees
And childhood memories.
Salt spray on shutters in a storm,
A pony to ride in the neighbor's barn,
White steps on our roof to catch the rain,
I wonder if it's still the same.
Caves to hide in and rocks to climb,
Out all day, never mind the time,
Easter lilies grown to sell,
But we didn't have to pay for the smell,
Or the view--
Every day was something new.
Gnarled cedars on a sandy path--
I think I found it on a map
In the BERMUDA ATLAS AND GAZETTEER,
A book to ponder year after year,
To find the places I have seen,
Long ago and in my dreams.

wow!
A beautifully designed and thoughtful book. The watercolors evoke the pink gentile Bermuda I visited as a child. This book is a must for any history and nautical buff who wants to learn of the origins of the island,as well as shipping and sailing lore.400 pages of comprehensive, thorough, detailed information about this corner of paradise on earth

The Ultimate Book on Bermuda!
As a first-time visitor to Bermuda, I was looking for a comprehensive book to learn about the island's history and culture. I was struck by this sophisticated volume - it stood out among the others for its beautiful look and feel, more like a fine 19th century guide for the well-heeled traveler. I found the watercolors alluring and then, as I scouted Bermuda, I realized that the artist had painted with such sensitivity and grace that he captured the real beauty of his chosen sites. For instance, the magnificent painting of the cave in Tom Moore's Jungle is exactly as the mystical and enchanted grotto appears in real life. Yet the artist's style still adds something magical that photographs or other mediums could not match. The book is also a joy to read as well as behold. The author's writing style, while factual, is easy to read and the entries include interesting folklore and anecdotes about all the places of Bermuda. The book is at once a valuable reference volume, an atlas with sixteen fold-out maps, and a beautiful collection of exquisite watercolors. Although it is pricey, the Bermuda Atlas is well worth the money spent as the ultimate souvenir of the island.

Bermuda A World Apart
Published in Hardcover by Imagenes Press (September, 1996)
Author: Roger A. Labrucherie

Magnificent!
Extraordinary photography, combined with intelligent, concise, even poetic text. I am English, but I have lived in Boston for many years. Bermuda is perhaps my favorite island--for its civility, its quiet beauty, a little touch of England in the middle of the Atlantic. This book captures Bermuda as I have seen no other book do ... perhaps because it focusses on the small things: the tiny flower known as Bermudiana, the young schoolgirl gazing deep into the camera ... The picture captions are concise, but packed with information; the author chooses and rations his words carefully! There's also, for those who want it, a complete text which conveys the history of the island. A small quibble: there's no information about hotels, restaurants, etc. However, this is not a guidebook, but rather a coffee-table "documentary" book, and in that department it is incomparable.

Absolutely superb
Having travelled to Bermuda many times over the past twenty years (and I lived there for a time as well), I have to say this is the finest and most complete "coffee-table" book on the island that I have ever seen. It is large-format, filled with superb color photographs (including a lot of aerial shots as well as some archival photographs of Bermuda in the mid-20th century). The text gives you a concise, intelligent overview of Bermuda's history. I've given a number of copies to friends who love the island. The jacket blurb says the author was once a Peace Corps Volunteer, and it shows ... this is a real in-depth portrait, not just "post-cardy" superficial coverage. I have several other books on Bermuda, but this one is in a class by itself.

A "Bermudaful" book.
This elegant photography book provides a thoughtful and perceptive portrait of a genteel world all of its own. It makes one think that to escape modern life, the place to go is Bermuda. There is a wide variety among the hundred fifty or so photographs, from close-ups of people to scenic panoramas, all in rich, lush colors. The beach scenes and sunsets are breathtaking. A bonus is the extensive historical background presented in an easy to absorb reader-friendly style. Particularly interesting are the stories of how Bermuda found itself squeezed between England and the Thirteen Colonies during the Revolutionary War and between North and South in the American Civil War. The author reveals that there were no cars on Bermuda until the 1940s and describes the more recent transformation of the island into a corporate center, "the Switzerland of the Atlantic." The care and craftsmanship that went into the creation of this work is obvious. This is literally a "Bermudaful" book. And do not forget to catch the sweetheart on page 17!

Bermuda on a Budget

Wonderful book!
We fell in love with Bermuda last year. It hurt to leave - and We're going back this fall. Thanks to this book, we'll be able to afford it. Now if we can just get cheap airfare....

This book is fabulous!
I have been going to Bermuda for two years now! It has been four times! I purchased this book for presents and future reference! It is exactly what Bermuda needs. This book will guide you to fascinating hide-away's (islander hang out's) and fabulous savings. Ms. Harriot has done a splendid job of making the island affordable for first timers and repeat visitors like myself! Purchase this book and enjoy!

A highly unusual and informative book.
My wife and I have been going to Bermuda for over fifteen years at least once and frequently twice a year. It is our home away from home and we really love it. We always stay at our Salt Kettle Cottages. There is our annual and close "family" we have acquired over the years through our owner, Hazel Lowe. Besides the overwhelming naturally beautiful scenery, it's people are it's real hidden beauty. As much as we thought we knew Bermuda, we are constantly amazed by Ms. Harriott's incisiveness and sheer depth of knowledge, not just of Bermuda as a stationary entity, but as a constantly changing 'home' in the Atlantic. She must spend inordinate amounts of time constantly researching the island to be able to include the issues of changes that she does, which are invaluable to people like my wife and me who love to keep contact with the Island(s). Ms. Harriott has told us, both with her book and with her updates, more than we could have found out about if we actually lived there. We don't know how she manages to provide such an on-going service at only the one-time cost of the book, but she does. And, we are really indebted to her for her book and her efforts. We are now always up-to-date about our second home and consider her book and follow-up unique in the travel industry in general and to our beautiful Bermuda in particular. Buy her book. You'll be amazed.

Back Door to Richmond: The Bermuda Hundred Campaign, April-June 1864
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Delaware Pr (July, 1987)
Author: William Glenn Robertson
Average review score:

The way all Civil War history should be written!
This is such an outstanding account of a Civil War campaign that I try to reread it every year or two. Aside from
being a great account of the Bermuda Hundred Campaign,
it is such a welcome change from so mant of the books currently being sold under the description of Civil War history, when they are in reality just junk. This is basically
a "how to" book on how to write and bring to life a Civil War
campaign, especially welcome in that it deals with a relatively obscure campaign in 1864 Virginia. Buy this book!

Little Known Detail on the attempts to Capture Petersburg
Wonderful description of the Union successes in almost capturing the little protected Petersburg and the incredulous defense by Confederate forces against huge odds. This book has details on the campaign that actually starts from the Suffolk area where Union cavalry penetrate the lightly defended no man's land southeast of Petersburg outside of Suffolk that even today is lightly populated. The Union cavalry penetrate through small towns like Ivor on route 460 and Windsor heading all the way to the Weldon railroad south of Petersburg. This raid rivals the Grierson raid made during that was made during the Vicksburg campaign. The audaciousness of the Union cavalry
led by Kautz in a series of raids below and above Petersburg rivals Stuarts trip around McClellan in 1862. This is excellent writing as Robertson writes in efficient prose about the early aspects of the Petersburg campaign that has not gotten enough print. The book follows Pickett's stressed out attempts to protect Petersburg with just a few thousand troops and his physically collapsing as soon as Beuraguard arrives to take command. The book also describes the fluttered attempt by Butler's surprise move on Petersburg that fails only because Generals like William Smith stop their attack impressed by Confederate forces that establish a bold front with small numbers, numbers so small that Smith could have steam rolled them and entered Petersburg. The book also describes Beauregard's attempts to get Lee's attention to get more troops and the description of the strained relationship between the two. Very well written description of the Confederate defense of Drewery's Bluff on the James (a wonderful tour stop today) and the counter attack along the Bermuda 100 that seals Butler's forces on the Peninsula as a "cork in a bottle" as Grant was alleged to have said. The author makes a good point that Grant's continued attack of Lee at the Wilderness and Spotsylvania may also have been to divert Confederate pressure and attention north away from Butler to protect Butler's forces allowing an opportunity for victory. The defense of Petersburg is very exciting as the Confederates thin defenses and response forces barely held on for modest reinforces defeating the Union attack. It's truly a miracle that the Confederates held on. This compact book tells the story rapidly but is well written with an easy to read style.

The Bermuda Triangle: Secrets of the Devil's Triangle (Call of Cthulhu Roleplaying Game)

Great Supplement!
This book is a great addition to any CoC collection. Not only does it provide tons of information on the people, politics, and customs of the Bermuda triangle and surrounding areas, but it is loaded with useful creatures, ideas, theories, etc. It has many charts that all keepers should find useful, such as one that randomnly chooses a sea animal. And, to top it all off, it comes with a scenario that I cant wait to throw on my investigators. It is well worth the cost, and then some!

Devil's Land
This book is very good if you enjoy the modern adventures for this game. I really liked it because i am very interested in the Bermuda Triangle. I won't tell you any of the story because it would ruin the fun of the game. I wouldn't reccomend this book if you enjoy long campaigns like Beyond th Mountains of Madness (which took me a couple of months to complete with my friends). I would highly recommend this book to anyone except people who like the 20's or 30's adventures.

Just back from my Bermuda Honeymoon
This book was our Bible in Bermuda on our honeymoon! For the most part this guide was right on the mark. Some of the restaurant reviews were off (The Shepards Pie at the Swizzle Inn is little more than chilli with mashed potatoes on top, and jackets really weren't required for men at dinner anywhere we dined over the week) but for the most part it was very helpful.

Excellent!!! All you need to plan your trip to Bermuda
Amazon's synopsis is right on. The book is thorough, concise. Covers every aspect of planning your trip, then is a constant companion while you're there--restaurant recommendations, sightseeing guide, good maps, guidance on finding the best beaches.

I disagreed only with Fodor's take on the dress code. Guys, you don't really have to wear Bermuda shorts if you prefer other styles. And you won't feel bad without a tie in the nicer restaurants. I saw a lot of mixed-dressing couples (no, not cross dressing!)--she's wearing a nice dress and he's in shorts and loafers without socks.

I found it helpful in selecting my hotel to look at lush color photos available on the Web (always lacking in guide books due to cost and space).

Finally, as always, Amazon will get your book to you real fast.

Lonely Planet Bermuda (Bermuda, 2nd Ed)
Published in Paperback by Lonely Planet (October, 2000)
Authors: Glenda Bendure and Ned Friary
Average review score:

A great achievement for a small place...
The major obstacle which hinders the performance of Lonely Planet and other guidebooks is that they often try and cover a very wide country or region, such as "Lonely Planet China" or "Lonely Planet USA", not to mention things like "Lonely Planet Africa on a shoestring". This often means that, in over 800 pages of a bulky book, only few are really relevant to what the reader is looking for. Indeed, the reader can be lost among lots of information, data, etc., which she or he has no interest in: if I find myself in Nairobi and am looking for a restaurant, do I really need to find myself browsing information about the visa procedures for Cameroon or the hotels of Sierra Leone ? Luckily, Bermuda is a much smaller place, and this has enabled the author and editors to truly produce a well-focused, condensed and overall excellent guidebook. The information for the visitor is complete and accurate, up-to-date, and indeed extremely useful (even in a place which does not present particular cultural or social obstacles for the average visitor): while Bermuda may still be possible to get to know on one's own, the aid of this little guidebook will be paramount. Its sections on hotels, restaurants, entertainment, are excellent. Coverage of things to see and do, sports and other activities, is down-to-the-point and very full. The sections on history and culture are also of great value, excellently written, easy-to-read in a captivating and pleasant prose, making this truly enjoyable and worthy reading for everyone. It is indeed a book one should surely pack before setting off to Bermuda.

Worth its weight in sunken treasure
I spent two weeks in Bermuda, and was very glad I brought this book along with me. I doubt very much that there are many interesting corners of the country that have been overlooked by the authors of this guide -- some of which I never would have thought to investigate had this book not alerted me to their existence. I especially appreciated all the historical and cultural details, and found that it was an invaluable tool in keeping costs down in a country where just about everything is VERY pricey. This book has since been re-used by other members of my family on their own trips to Bermuda, and has paid for itself several times over.

Best Dives' Snorkeling Adventures : A Guide to the Bahamas, Bermuda, Caribbean, Hawaii & Florida Keys
Published in Paperback by PhotoGraphics Publishing (March, 1998)
Authors: Joyce Huber and Jon Huber
Average review score:

A terrific book for vacation planning
This is the best book for snorkeling I've ever found. The other books are so vague, they don't tell me much of anything. This one describes all the neat places to walk in from the beach and go snorkeling, how rough or calm the area is, how to get to various snorkeling beaches once I get there, whether the kids can safely swim in each area. It also has all the resorts that have snorkeling off their beaches, which is really nice for people traveling with small children and the airlines and travel stuff we need.

Great Book for Beginners And Life Long Divers
My wife and I found this book to be one of the best, Snorkeling guides we have ever used. We find all of the Huber's books to be informative, thorough, accurate, and fun to read as well. We love it! We buy new ones every time they update them with new info.

We love this book.
My wife and I, both avid snorklers, picked up a copy for our trip to the British Islands and found some really neat new spots. This is a terrific resource.

The Bermuda Indenture
Published in Paperback by Court Street Press (February, 2001)
Author: Strudwick Marvin Rogers
Average review score:

Drama in the Deep South
A can't be put down adventure through the history of property in the deep south. This novel offers the reader a true to life view of how property was transferred or taken from the poor. The story is very well written for a first time author and is as entertaining as informative. A must read book

Bermuda Indenture
I particularly enjoyed the author's extensive knowledge of his multiple subjects--the oil and gas business, title law and the historical period. Sounds dull? It's not! The characters are well-crafted and the locales interesting and well-drawn. Rogers does a great job of making an exciting story that doesn't collapse or bog down under the weight of technicalities. I lent my copy to two friends, a retired title lawyer and an oil and gas geologist from Texas. Both raved and purchased several copies each to give as gifts.
Hope Mr. Rogers is already at work on another book.

Fast-paced and well-researched!
From beginning to end, this book had me on the edge of my seat. It is extremely well-written and obviously reflects an amazing amount of extensive research. It's a wonderful novel and well worth the read! I can't wait for the movie!
